JUNGLEPUSSY ~ momaps1, august

junglepussy had a show in august. I had been listening to her new album "satisfaction guaranteed" every single day (and have been since she dropped it ok). she goes hard as fuck and is so real, it's something that's gotten her relatively far in her music career. there's nothing like her out there & you can tell she's speaking from her own experiences/beliefs. so refreshing & inspiring. spending the summer in new york city with my girls was the perfect backdrop for her goddess flow.

so yaa, the momaps1 venue in queens is hella fun. there was a huge crowd, but I jumped the rope to where the photographers were bc no one stopped me. I was at her feet & shaking with a rush of adrenaline bc I could see how hard she was working and performing. so amazing. shooting her was definitely one of my favorite memories of the summer.

niki & I took the metro north up to coldspring for a hike. it was magical and fresh and g o r g e o u s. definitely trying to make another trip before it becomes too cold to live a reasonable life.

summer in the city

photo dump from the rest of this summer. most of these are disposables. for my birthday, we went out in bushwick & managed to get a lot of free beer bc I was turning 21. my mom & aunt & cousin visited me for my birthday week as well. we saw the koons exhibition & got barricaded into the sidewalk as president obama drove thru the skreets of nyc. it was a perfect day, I love all the people in my life.

ALSO I finally got to see brand new!!! they played the forest hill stadium. having heard seventy times 7, I can die happy. (shouts out to jesse lacey the og sad boi never could find those d pics oh well)

alterNATIVE 2014

this summer I was blessed to have participated in the program alterNATIVE for two weeks of july. my fellow native american peers (&alumni) from columbia university facilitated a curriculum about indigenous history, identity, and resistance. we discussed colonization, genocide, decolonization, indian country, and of course education. we visited navajo communities to'hajiilee, pine hill, and pueblo communities isleta and zuni.

though a large portion of the students weren't the targeted demographic (high school students thinking about college) it was a pretty successful program. some days seemed incredibly long and hectic. a lot of the times we had to improvise because the younger kids couldn't sit still through a dry powerpoint about native policy. but getting everyone in the room to feel comfortable enough to share with us their ideas of stereotypes or ask us questions about sovereignty or andrew jackson was all we needed. hopefully they understand that there is a space for them and their communities in higher education as well. we just all have to make it together as indigenous youths.

alterNATIVE was definitely the highlight of my summer. shout out to danielle for letting us into her beautiful pueblo village house, isleta casino & resort, community, and of course her home. I fell in love with new mexico and cannot wait to go back.
