photo I: first half

sorry I haven't been uploading much these past few months! I started taking a photography class this semester with thomas roma, who is incredibly inspiring/frightening. I've been learning how to develop black & white negatives (so pls excuse the scratches or chemical smudges) and even prints with ilford enlargers. it's really time consuming and takes a lot of trial and error but feels so fucking great to get right.

we're told to take pictures of our everyday lives, and not really go out of our way to photograph things that are "exotic" or "interesting." we also have some odd rules to follow, i.e. no babies (someone broke this rule the first critique/was the example of why not to take pictures of babies ever), no old people, no fire hydrants with snow, etc etc. most of these photos are just around columbia/barnard campus, the snow fight on low steps, valentine's day, morningside heights, downtown, my suite, my room.

I've come to really love b&w for many reasons. its cinematic. and unlike color, it allows a sort of room for imagination because it's bare/simplistic in that it's just portraying the light and form of something. so yeah, I've been taking at least a role a week of b&w for this class, and am pretty busy in the photo lab, but have finally gotten around to getting these negatives scanned onto discs.
